2020 Ram 1500 vs 2020 Chevrolet Silverado

Whether you're looking for a vehicle that can keep up with the day-to-day wear of the job, or a comfortable ride with added utility, there is nothing quite like the pickup truck. This segment has a reputation of being tough and ready to handle anything, but which pickup is better suited for your needs? Ram and Chevrolet both have best-in-class pickup truck models with impressive payloads and admirable features, but only one brand has the better truck. Today we're breaking down their top models to decide which vehicle is the best option out there. We have the tech-heavy and capable 2020 Ram 1500 on the left, while on the right is the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. Which model is the ultimate all-American workhorse? Read on and find out!

2020 Ram 1500 Power & Handling

In the 2020 model year, the Ram 1500 offers four engine variants, including an all-new 3.0-liter Ecodiesel V6, rated at 480 lb-ft of torque and an impressive 260 horsepower. This engine is more powerful and fuel-efficient than others of its kind with a stout maximum tow capacity of 12,560 pounds! Other engine choices include the standard 3.6-liter V6, which comes standard with Ram's mild-hybrid setup that improves the smoothness of the stop-start engine and fuel efficiency. The eTorque system replaces the alternator with a type of motor/generator that stores energy and adds power with a subtle transition. The next engine is a 5.7-liter V8, which can be optioned with the eTorque system. The V8 is rated with a 395 horsepower and comes with variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation. Regardless of the engine, it will be mated with an eight-speed transmission, making the Ram 1500 easy to drive in every situation. The transmission is smooth and responsive while the new 2-valve Frequency Response Damping shocks provide responsive steering and agile attitude in turns. All Ram 1500 models can come in either 2- or 4-wheel-drive configurations. Even without the impressive powertrain choices, the Ram 1500 offers steady steering, secure handling, and confident braking thanks to the coil-spring rear suspension, which is the only of its kind in this segment!

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Power & Handling

The standard engine for the 2020 Silverado is a 4.3-liter V6 with two types of cylinder-management systems available to optimize fuel consumption, the Active Fuel Economy and Dynamic Fuel Management. A step up to the 5.3-liter V8 engine adds more power with the option of 6-, 8-, or 10-speed automatic transmission. The turbocharged 2.7-liter variant is also available with a 6.2-liter V8 at the top of the lineup with a towing capacity of 11,600 pounds. Unfortunately, there's not much difference between this V8 and the lower 5.3-liter V8. Finally, there is a new diesel engine for the 2020 year, a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-6 with 460 lb-ft of torque with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds. Not quite as impressive as some of its competition, but it will pass. When it comes to handling, the Silverado drives smaller than it is but has taut handling and the acceleration and braking are only average. Also, mid-corner bumps will upset the truck pretty-easily, and the four-wheel-drive option will do okay, but still leaves a lot to be desired. The Silverado's ride comfort is also questionable; the seats are already not as plush or comfortable as its competition, but when you add repetitive bumps, dips, or road imperfections, the truck can get bouncy.

2020 Ram 1500 Features & Design

With standard features including a rearview camera, trailer-sway control- 18-inch steel wheels, heated power-adjustable side mirrors, push-button start, and tilt/telescoping steering wheel, the entry-level Tradesman is a strong start to the lineup. The standard infotainment system is a 5-inch touchscreen Uconnect system, although an 8.4-inch and an exclusive 12-inch screen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto are also available. The top-level model comes with a 33-gallon fuel tank, power-folding trailer-tow side mirrors, a dual-pane moonroof, deployable side steps, damped tailgate with a power release, 22-inch wheels, and other features. Inside, there is a 7.0-inch thin-film transistor display, leather seating heated memory seats with a variety of leather, wood, and metal interior accents available. No matter which of the six models you choose, it will have a uniquely themed interior with Ram's winning cabin that features comfortable seats and high-quality materials. The Ram 1500 also adds unmatched storage solutions, including a sizeable configurable center console, spacious in-floor bins, and optional RamBox locking bins built into the side of the bed. Even the base Tradesman has nicely shaped seats with added comfort and support for long distances while the rear seat as an agreeable angle and surprising amount of recline. The bed is available in either a 6'4" long bed or a 5'7" short bed depending on if you choose the Quad Cab or Crew Cab configurations. Other convenient features include stand-alone tech, mechanical options, or luxury options or feature packages. There is a military-themed Built to Serve package that adds the 4x4 Off-Road Group package, 20-inch wheels, and exterior colors that are not available on other models. There are also Black Edition and Night Edition packages, which add black-colored styling elements.

2020 Chevrolet Silverado Features & Design

The Silverado offers eight trim levels with either a Double Cab or Crew cab configuration and a selection of 5'8", 6/5', and 8' bed sizes. The base Work Truck model comes with a 7-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker audio system. 17-inch painted steel wheels and the option of vinyl or cloth bench seat is also standard. Unfortunately, the only infotainment upgrade is an 8-inch touchscreen. Overall, the Silverado is a bit lackluster, including the quality of the materials used in the cabin. The daily use of the Silverado is a few flaws, including an outdated design. The center console is boxy and comes with multiple pockets, but nearly as much as one would expect from a truck with a column-mounted gear shifter. There is also no available power-tilt/telescoping steering-wheel adjustment at any trim level. If you plan on carting around kids or loading seats, you may find some difficulty thanks to the truck's ride height. Optional features include remote keyless entry, cruise control, power mirrors, and a rear-window defogger. There is also a Z71 off-road package, wireless device charging, power tailgate, heated seats/steering wheel/side mirrors, Bose audio, and a 2-inch suspension lift available. The available Safety package adds front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and other features. In contrast, the Safety Package II adds forward collision warning, forward pedestrian detection with braking, and adaptive cruise control. Add the available Technology Package, and you get a head-up display, a bed-view camera, and a 360-degree parking camera. This last package also adds two trailer cameras, but these don't take into account a trailer's blind spots.

There's no doubt about it. The Ram 1500 is the clear winner! While the Silverado offers decent towing and powertrain options, it is no match for the tried-and-true capability of the Ram 1500. Even without the 1500's superior handling, it provides a luxury that is unmatched by its rivals, even in its base model. The cabin offers comfortable seating and more standard and optional features than any other pickup truck, including an incredible 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The new Ecodiesel engine promises to be a fan-favorite with a best-in-class towing capacity of 12,600 pounds! Furthermore, the Ram 1500 offers more storage and utility than the outdated Silverado could even dream of! To learn more about the 2020 Ram 1500, check out our full review and visit our dealership!
