Hands-Off Autonomous Driving Is Coming to The Grand Wagoneer

Grogan's Towne explains what autonomous driving technology does

According to the folks at Stellantis, an autonomous driving technology is being developed for future versions of the Grand Wagoneer called the Level 2 Active Drive Assist feature.  While the exact release date has not been established, this is an exciting new technology we look forward to!

How does autonomous driving work?

Autonomous driving technology refers to the technology that is behind cars and trucks that is designed to take over some of the driving functions. Today, many vehicles have automated functions that "assist" the driver, like automatic braking systems, but the industry is headed towards actual driverless cars. These are cars and trucks that may have someone in the vehicle, but they may not be physically behind the wheel. Currently, companies such as Google, Uber, Tesla, Nissan, and other major automakers, are hard at work on fully autonomous vehicles.

What are the different autonomous driving levels?

Engineers have established five different levels of autonomous vehicles:

Level 0: All major systems are controlled by a driver behind the wheel.
Level 1: Vehicle has one automatic system, such as cruise control or automatic braking.
Level 2: The vehicle offers at least two automated functions but a driver is behind the wheel.
Level 3: The vehicle has numerous automated functions but a driver is expected to take over when alerted.
Level 4: The car is fully-autonomous but a driver must be on-board
Level 5: The car is completely capable of self-driving without a driver.

What are the advantages of autonomous driving?

More efficient travel - Autonomous vehicles would lead to increased roadway capacity. Also, less energy would be used because autonomous cars will be able to accelerate and brake more efficiently.

Greater safety - Safety experts predict that the full development of autonomous technology would decrease accidents dramatically. For example, consulting firm McKinsey & Company says this technology would lead to 90% fewer accidents.

Far less need for parking space - Personally-owned vehicles are said to be used only 5% of the time and are parked for the remaining 95% of the time.  Especially if shared ownership was involved, autonomous vehicles would be able to be used far more often.
