Summer is here, and this means family road trips! Road trips are always fun to plan, especially in the spring and summer, but they can become pricey too depending on how many days and your choice of destination.

How can you save money effectively for your next road trip? Here are some great tips I learned through the years that have been proven to work and has saved quite a few pennies. The two main savings here are through food and gas.

Pack Your Own Food: Rather than purchasing meals and snacks at every rest stop you go to, you can save a lot if you pack your own food. You will cut down on food costs significantly this way.

Create a Meal Plan: Determine how many meals you will have to cover while on the road, as well as overnight stops. If you like dining out, pick and choose accordingly for your budget. You can even look on a map to see what restaurants are located near your predicted stops.

Goodies for the Kids: It is likely that every time you stop, the kids will beg to get food or candy. The problem is when you are at a rest stop, you are at the mercy of their prices, and don't have a chance to shop for the best sales. Instead, before your trip select some nice surprises for the kids. It might be a type of candy they have never had. You can even create small 'snack' boxes for them. Then, as the road trip wears on you can slowly distribute them as needed.

Gas Savings: Sign up for gas rewards at local gas stations if you haven't already. That way you can gauge your travel and budget out your gas prices and save money on rewards you have obtained through your preferred gas station. There are gas apps available that are helpful in this too.

Overall, create your budget and simply just stick to it. You will be happy that you did!
