What engines and transmission does the Grand Cherokee L use?
Two engines are available for the 2021 Grand Cherokee L. The baseline is a 3.6L V6 engine that cranks out 290 horsepower and 257 lb-ft of torque. This is capable of towing up to 6,200lbs when properly equipped. For drivers who seek more power than that, there is an available 5.7L V8 that kicks out 357 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. This increases the towing capability up to 7,200lbs. Both engines are mated to a durable TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission with on-the-fly shift map changing to adapt to the driver's needs based on input, torque changes, temperature, and hill detection.
What are the Grand Cherokee L drivetrains?
The 2021 Grand Cherokee L comes standard in rear-wheel drive, while three of Jeep's most capable 4x4 systems are available. Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II all feature a network of sensors to monitor wheel spin and detect slippage. When the sensors detect a loss of traction, up to 100% of the engine's available torque is redistributed to the axle with the most traction. While Quadra-Trac I uses a single-speed transfer case that defaults to 4-High, Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II employ a two-speed transfer case with Active 4-Low for extra all-terrain confidence. For top-of-the-line off-road capability, Quadra-Drive II also uses an electronic limited-slip rear differential.
Is air suspension available for the Grand Cherokee L?
For a vehicle to keep up on the trails, it needs to have good ground clearance. The Grand Cherokee L's available Quadra-Lift air suspension provides five adjustable height settings for any situation, Normal Ride Height (NRH), Park, Aero, Off-Road 1, and Off-Road 2. The Grand Cherokee L has an NRH of 8 inches of ground clearance. Park mode lowers the four-corner air springs down to 6.4 inches of ground clearance, allowing for easy access. Aero mode lowers the ground clearance to 7.4 inches to provide fuel-saving aerodynamics for optimal performance with less drag. Off-Road 1 lifts the air shocks to 9 inches of ground clearance for light off-roading. For more intense off-roading, Off-Road 2 lifts the vehicle to 10.9 inches of ground clearance. Off-Road 2 also allows the Grand Cherokee L to take on up to 24 inches of water.
What about a traction management system?
Selec-Terrain, Jeep's coveted traction management system, is available on all 4x4 Grand Cherokee L models. Selec-Terrain includes Auto, Snow, Sport, Rock, and Sand/Mud modes to give drivers a customizable driving experience. Auto puts the 4x4 and traction control systems in control to adapt to any changes in road and weather conditions. Snow mode adjusts the traction control and 4x4 systems to decrease wheel slippage and keep drivers going straight even on snow-covered roads. Sport mode lowers the Quadra-Lift system to Aero mode and adjusts shift points and throttle control for an exciting driving experience and better fuel economy. Rock mode raises Quadra-Lift to its highest ride height setting, Off-Road II. If equipped, the two-speed transfer case will shift into 4-Low while the differentials, throttle, and transmission coordinate for optimal control on rugged terrain. Sand/Mud mode optimizes the four-wheel-drive system to counteract slippage with rapid torque redistribution.
