Too often we base our summers on spending time in other places, but we fail to seek the beauty in the town that we live in. Touring your own town can be a fun, inexpensive, educational way to spend summer break. Consider hopping in the car and exploring these local attractions and public spots with your kids this summer. Many of these spaces participate in children's days or host events with free admission.

Local Museum

Going to your local museum is always an exciting adventure for kids. Use this trip to educate your child and help her become aware of your town's history and how it came to fruition. Being able to see and touch artifacts makes for an interactive experience. Visit your local museum's website for information about children's day. Sign up for their newsletter to stay in the know of events and special happenings.

Farmers Market

The local farmers market offers so many learning opportunities, giving your children a chance to meet some of the people who grow some of their favorite fruits and vegetables. The farmers market is more than just fruits and veggies though. At the farmer's market families can enjoy homemade goods such as jams, kombucha, and crafted wares, live music, and food vendors.

Library

A trip to the local library can help to foster a lifelong love of reading. Your child will be amazed just by the number of books they can delve in and may enjoy getting lost in endless choices. Many libraries have free summer reading programs where volunteers and library staff read to groups of children.

Park Events

Summer is such a great time for community events such as festivals, parades, fairs and carnivals. Children light up at the sight of bright colors, music and activities. These are always great events to keep them busy for hours and they're fairly inexpensive.

These are just a few ideas to inspire you to explore your own town this summer. Check out your local parks and recreation website for more fun things to do while the weather's still great!
