Find Your EV at Grogan's Towne CDJR!

As you're probably aware, EVs and PHEVs are taking the automotive industry by storm! These vehicles feature innovative powertrains that allow you to harness the power of electricity to push your adventure to the next level. For the most part, driving an electric car feels very similar to driving a traditional gas-powered vehicle. However, there are also a few key differences that set the two kinds of vehicles apart from each other. First off, you'll need to learn how to charge your EV or PHEV. Most charging ports are modeled after a fuel port, and using it is even easier than filling your car with gas. For example, if you have a home charging station, you can simply plug your car in and walk away! Continued down below, we'll be sharing our top tips about EV charging in public, so that you can keep your car charged up and ready for anything!

How Do Charging Stations Work?

As we mentioned above, using a public EV charging station is a very similar experience to filling up a traditional car at a gas pump. When you pull up to one of the public charging stations here in Ohio, you'll have a few options on how you want to manage your charging. If you have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone connectivity, you'll be able to start and stop your charging from inside the car once it's plugged in. You can also download an app to your smartphone! First, pull your car into the charging station, and be sure to match the charging icon on your vehicle with the icon on the station to make sure they're compatible. Next, plug in your charger, listening for the "click" to ensure the cable is fully inserted. From there, you'll complete your payment using the card reader on the charging station. Then, monitor your charging session on the touchscreen, or from your phone using a mobile app!

Where to Find Charging Stations in Toledo

Here in the city of Ohio, we're already well on our way to making EV charging more accessible for our community! Currently, there are 26 charging stations available for public use. These can all be found within about 9 miles of one another! Of these 26 ports, 15 of them are Level 2, while the remaining 11 stations are Level 3. These levels indicate how fast the charging port can charge up your battery, with Level 3 being the more powerful option. If you're a current EV driver, or interested in becoming one, you might be interested in learning where these ports are located. They are all conveniently placed in centralized locations, like the Toledo Museum of Art, for example. There are also stations throughout the University of Toledo campus! If you're planning on traveling, you can also find many other stations throughout the state of Ohio and beyond, usually clustered around major cities like Cleveland and Columbus!

What are some Charging Tips?

As we mentioned above, the charging process is very similar to the experience you might have at a typical gas station. However, since you're charging using electricity rather than using gas, there will be a few differences. For example, you'll notice that the speed at which your vehicle charges may vary. This is due to a few factors, the first of which being the type of charging port you use. A Level 3 charger will be able to charge your EV more quickly than a Level 2 charger. When you plug your car in, it will begin communicating with the charging station, transferring its current charge to the system, known as an SOC, or State of Charge. In turn, this will let the charging port know how much power to deliver to your vehicle, in terms of kW. When you first plug your car in, the charging will start off slow, then amp up to peak speed for the main duration of your session. Then, once your car reaches about an 80% charge, it will begin to taper off again. If you're in a rush, we recommend unplugging your car after that initial boost so that you can take advantage of the quickest charging time!
