What is the Difference Between MPG and MPGe?
Learn More from Grogan's Towne CDJR!
More than 20 years have passed since the first-ever hybrid car was released. As of now, almost every auto manufacturer in the industry has at least one model that uses electric power in some form, whether it be hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or all-electric. As electric power gained popularity in the automotive industry, a way to help consumers track their vehicle's efficiency had to be created. Thus, the phrase MPGe was born. MPGe stands for miles per gallon equivalent. With the Jeep 4xe plug-in hybrid lineup available here at Grogan's Towne Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we'd like to offer you information about the phrase MPGe and how it compares to MPG. Please continue reading below to learn more!
What Does MPGe Stand For?
As was previously mentioned, the phrase MPGe is the acronym for miles per gallon equivalent. This means that it is the measurement of how far you can travel on electric power compared to a gallon of gasoline because electric vehicles don't use gasoline, of course. Instead, EVs use kilowatts of electricity. The MPGe scale isn't an exact one-to-one measurement. However, it gives EV owners the most precise estimate of their vehicle's efficiency. If you're shopping for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Grand Cherokee 4xe, or Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, you'll notice that the window sticker lists both MPG and MPGe. This is because drivers of plug-in hybrids can choose between hybrid, electric, or gasoline power.
What Determines a Car's MPGe?
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is responsible for determining a vehicle's efficiency. For gas-powered vehicles, this process simply involves seeing how far the car can drive on a single gallon of gasoline. However, determining the electric equivalent of miles per gallon is a bit more complicated. In 2010, the EPA found that the electric equivalent of one gallon of gas is 33.7-kilowatt-hours. So, as an example, the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe gets 56 MPGe. This means that on 33.7 kWh of charge, the Grand Cherokee 4xe will travel 56 miles. When you're shopping for a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle, you should also pay attention to the total driving range. This is how many miles the car can travel on a full charge. When looking at a PHEV, you'll see two ranges on the sticker: total driving range and electric range. While total driving range is how many miles you can travel with a full battery and full tank of gas, electric range is the measurement of how far you can travel on electric power only.
What EVs Does Grogan's Towne CDJR Offer?
Of the brands that we sell, there are three plug-in hybrid models. These include the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Jeep Wrangler 4xe, and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe. However, as electric power becomes more popular, Jeep has laid a plan to accomplish what they're calling Zero Emissions Freedom by the 2030 model year. With this announcement, the Jeep Recon and Wagoneer S were revealed as the first-ever all-electric vehicles from Jeep. You can read more about Jeep's electric plans on this page here on our website.
